PICKENS — Lightning delays, thunderstorms and a stadium evacuation weren’t enough to put a damper on the Blue Flame last Friday as Pickens nailed down their first victory of the season, shutting out Liberty 30-0.

Pickens (1-2) had been struggling early this season with back to back losses against Easley and Pendleton but Coach John Boggs redeemed himself by securing the team’s much needed win on Friday.

Thunderstorms rolled in midway through the first half and a lightning delay followed by a full stadium evacuation with less than two minutes left in the first quarter threatened to steal away Pickens’ momentum. The teams headed to the locker rooms with the Blue Flame up by a touchdown.

The storms caused a nearly two-hour delay before players were permitted to take the field again. In a combination of costly errors by the Red Devils, including five turnovers, Pickens had managed a comfortable 17-0 lead at the half, a lead that would only grow later in the game.

Liberty (0-2) hopes to turn things around this week as they return home to host Walhalla. The Red Devils had less than 90 yards of total offense against Pickens and have failed to score a single point (outside of overtime) all season.

Pickens has Friday off but will travel to Piedmont on Sept. 18 to take on Wren.

Kick off for Liberty vs. Walhalla is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Liberty High School.
