ANDERSON COUNTY – In an effort to raise money for the athletic department at Wren High School, the booster club is going to have to get a little dirty.

“This is our second annual “Flud” Run,” said Dan Cooper, booster club president, “This is our big fundraiser for the athletic department. We use the funds from this event to help cover expenses for travel and the equipment for all of the athletic teams here at Wren.”

Cooper said that this year’s event would include an additional purpose.

“This year, in addition to raising money for the athletic department, we are going to give some of the proceeds to an organization called ‘Let There Be Mom’ based out of Greenville,” Cooper said. “The organization helps families with one parent experiencing a terminal illness.”

According to Cooper, the additional funds will be given in memory of Dan Wigington.

“He died from cancer not long after the run was completed,” Cooper said. “We use his family farm for a large portion of the ‘Flud’ Run course, so we have dedicated this year’s run to Dan’s memory.”

The “Flud” Run will take place on June 1 and will begin at the ball fields near Wren High School.

“The race will start at the ball fields at 8 a.m.,” Cooper said. “Each team will have an individual start time and there are five categories of runners ranging from fast to those who are simply out there to have a good time.”

Cooper said that there will be 24 obstacles on the course including a tire wall.

“It is a 3.1 mile course and there will be 24 obstacles,” Cooper said. “We are also adding a Kid Zone this year for children ten and under. It will provide a chance for them to get muddy under a safer environment, and unlike last year, the event will also include food.”

There were 135 teams to participate in the first “Flud” Run and Cooper is hoping for 200 this year.

“Last year, we had 135 teams and we are expecting for at least that number this year, but we are thinking we may get up to 200 when it is all said and done,” Cooper said. “It was very popular last year and we received positive feedback. There was a lot of interest generated.”

In order to receive a free t-shirt, registration must be completed by May 20; however, participants and teams may register as late as race day.
