PICKENS COUNTY — The laugh-a-minute English farce “See How They Run” is coming to Easley Foothills Playhouse May 31.
The show runs through June 9 with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
This fast-paced comedy about a young vicar’s American actress wife trying to fit into a small, tightly-knit British town is set in England during World War II. The plot thickens when she loans one of her husband’s clerical suits to a soldier friend so the soldier can take off his uniform and go to a play with her.
Soon an escaped Russian spy, who speaks no English, bonks the real vicar on the head and steals his clothes as his own disguise. Next a visiting vicar arrives earlier than expected as does the wife’s uncle, who happens to be a bishop no less. Now, all the men are dressed like vicars except the vicar, who’s running around in his underwear.
A pompous church busybody arrives and suspects the worst of the young couple while also accidentally getting drunk on a bottle of cooking sherry. If things can go wrong, they do. Confusion ensues with mistaken identities, drunkenness, scandal and multiple vicars running in and out every door.
The show’s director, Maurice Reed, promises “An evening of non-stop laughter. I have seen this show, been in this show and never get tired of it,” he says. In fact, this time the veteran actor and director is both directing the show and acting in it.
