Pickens County experiencing spike in auto break-ins
by Joe Toppe
Staff Writer

PICKENS- A series of automobile break-ins have plagued the City of Pickens, Liberty and surounding areas in the county over the last several weeks.

According to the Pickens City Police, there have been a total of 18 incidents, including two that have taken place in the daytime at the Ingles Grocery Store and Ace Hardware parking lots.

“We are asking all citizens to remove valuable items from their vehicles and lock them. We would also like to hear from anyone who may have some information related to these crimes and for the people to watch out for any suspicious activity and call the police immediately,” said assistant chief of police, Travis Riggs.

Officials state that the suspects are taking anything of value, and that in most cases, the doors of the burglarized vehicles have been unlocked.

“The Police Department is increasing patrols and working hard on these cases. Please call with any information or tips and ask to speak with a detective,” said Riggs.

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office has also noted an increase in automobile break-ins.

‘We have had issues with auto break-ins in the county since Oct. 18. We have experienced a total of eight incidents around Pickens and Liberty. We urge people to lock their doors and leave their valuables at home,” said Captain Keith Galloway of the Pickens County Sheriff’s office.

Pickens County officials warn that cars parked in a driveway provide a false security and can make an easy target when they are unlocked.
