“It’s a good story-a classic spy mystery, from the master of the mystery genre`, Alfred Hitchcock but with a twist,” said DeVault. “Most dialogue of the original Hitchcock film is still in this play-we just use four actors to play all the parts. I like to say it’s like Hitchcock meets Monty Python. It has something for everyone. I think our audience will find THE 39 STEPS a real treat.
The show runs through Feb. 17, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
This juicy spy story is a fast-paced whodunit with an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance. The show has 150ish characters played by just four actors, who make lightning-fast costume and character changes right before your eyes, at times on a speeding train. An award-winning, long-running Broadway play.
“I have been pushing this show for a couple of years- and it was the right time. Foothills Theatre has the best stage for this kind of show-large enough to move around yet small enough to create the intimate/engaging atmosphere I want for this show. It’s a challenging show to direct and act because it’s very fast paced and we have four actors playing 100 different parts-but well worth it. It’s a ride from start to finish,” DeVault said.
This is the first time for DeVault to be in a production of THE 39 STEPS, but she says she has seen it performed several times at different venues, including the Barter Theatre. “I love the challenge of this script and making it come to life on our stage here has been most satisfying,” DeVault said. “The tech in this show is crazy! Over 140 sound effects, light effects and even shadow puppetry….yes, we have it all.”
Despite the dramatics of the effects, DeVaults credits the cast with the extra appeal.
“The cast IS the show,” she said. “I am honored to have four of the best actors from this area bring these characters to life on the Foothills Stage. The cast includes, Owen Robertson as our hero, Richard Hannay, Erin Hensley Schultz, plays all of the female characters — love interests for our hero, Annabella Schmidt; foreign agent, Margaret; the lonely crofter’s wife and Pamela, the girl who is literally handcuffed to Hannay through most of the second act. Maurice Reed and Steve Schultz play a multitude of characters, dialects, ages and genders. It really does has something for everyone, and I can say a good time will be had by all-cast and audience.
