DACUSVILLE — A Pickens county inmate is facing new charges including attempted murder, kidnapping and armed robbery after deputies say he struck an attendant at a Dacusville Recycling Center and then fled.

Zachary Scott Finley, 20, of 1013 Robert P. Jeanes Road, Easley, is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, malicious injury to personal property, and breaking into a motor vehicle, according to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday, deputies with Pickens County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Recycling Station on Shoals Creek Church Road in Dacusville after a passerby called 911 to report that an inmate working at the Recycling Center had assaulted the attendant and fled on foot. Officers found the attendant had been assaulted and locked in a storage room at the rear of the facility.

According to the warrant, Finley is a Pickens County Detention Center inmate assigned to the Dacusville Recycling Center. The victim, a Pickens County employee, is Finley’s supervisor.

Finley is accused of luring the victim to the back of the office at the center, where he allegedly struck him at least three times in the head with an aluminum baseball bat.

According to the warrant, the victim then threw his wallet at Finley, in hopes that he would leave.

Finley allegedly padlocked the victim before fleeing the center, the warrant stated.

Within 15 minutes of arrival on the scene, responding deputies located the subject, Zachary Scott Finley on Griffin Road and, after a short foot pursuit, took the subject into custody.

Finley is also charged with escape by the Pickens County Stockade authorities. Finley was serving a 30 day magistrate court sentence for criminal domestic violence and was due to be released in mid January.

The victim was transported by EMS to Greenville Memorial.

Why was a violent inmate working recycle? Serving time for VIOLENCE should have been a red flag to those in charge. I think whoever made the decision to let Finley work recycle should lose their job. His or her decision almost resulted in someone's death. This decision also put the public at risk. Finley could just as easily attacked anyone going through the recycle station that day for their car.

In addition, the related Pickens Sentinel stories reveal five other inmates escaped from the Pickens County Prison or while working recycle within the past two years. What's going on????
