EASLEY — The Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library in Easley will be waiving overdue fines for charity in the month of December.
“Food for Fines” will run from Dec. 1 through Dec. 15, and the library will accept donations of non-perishable food items but will not accept glass jars, damaged containers, expired, opened, or partially used items.
“We are accepting food in exchange for fines. If you bring in non-perishable food, we will accept it and waive your fines,” said Circulation Clerk, Kathy Armijo.
All goods will be given to local food banks to help families in need.
“We only require one item per card but we try to encourage people to bring in as much as they can because it is for a very good cause,” Armijo said.
The library is encouraging everyone to donate even if there are no overdue fines.
“Every year the library accepts donations for food for our local food banks and each one is specific to each branch and is closer to its community, so if you are donating to Pickens, it goes towards Pickens and the families that may be in need there,” said Jennifer Crenshaw, Public Services Manager. “One can of food will waive any amount of overdue fines but we encourage people to donate regardless of whether they have fines or not.”
The library will waive only overdue items.
“Our “Food for Fines” program is used only to offset overdue charges, any fees for lost or damaged items still have to be paid for,” Crenshaw said.
