LIBERTY — The Liberty Red Devils are traveling to Iva on Friday to take on the Fighting Tigers for their 2014 season opener against Crescent.
Liberty Head Football Coach Kyle Stewart said he wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being a low scoring game.
“I’ve watched some film, and I met Coach Murdock, and we seem to have very similar styles of football.” Stewart said during a phone interview on Monday. “Depending on turnovers, I think this will most likely be a defensive game.”
The Red Devils’ plan of attack for Friday’s game is no surprise: They’re going to do what they do best — run the ball. Controlling the clock, controlling the ball and watching out for turnovers will be the key to shutting down Crescent’s big defensive line and keeping their running backs off the field.
Crescent’s Fighting Tigers managed an impressive 8-4 record for the season last year, a number Murdock plans to improve on in his second year as head football coach. This year, they are returning 13 seniors to their varsity team, adding even more experience to their already solid lines.
Stewart is coming off a 2-8 2013 season in his fourth year as head football coach. He is looking to get his team back in the running for a state championship, a title last held by Liberty High School in 1947.
