Blue Ridge brings the heat to Pickens
PICKENS — On what was the coldest night so far this season, the Fighting Tigers of Blue Ridge lived up to their name by coming to Pickens and defeating the Blue Flame on their home field.
The Tigers struck first on a nine play, 56 yard drive, as Chris Pittman of the Tigers took the ball into the end zone on a one yard touchdown run with point after complete and Blue Ridge took a 7-0 lead over Pickens.
The Pickens offense struggled all night with turnovers as they had three on the night. The defense of Pickens however managed to hold Blue Ridge to just seven points into the second quarter. Pickens would score just 11 seconds into the second quarter on a three point conversion by Matt Gravely, to cut the Tigers’ lead to four points. Blue Ridge came back on a Ty Montgomery pass to Tay Jenkins to extend their lead to 14 - 3.
The Tigers’ defense would strike next on an intercepted Blue Flame pass by Kyle Pcheny, who scored on a 55 yard touchdown run to bring the score to: Tigers 21 – Blue Flame 3. Blue Ridge would once again score on a Montgomery pass to Tay Jenkins, extending their lead to 28 -3.
Pickens took over on offense with just under a minute left in the first half, but turned the ball over to Blue Ridge on the Blue Flame 28 yard line. A Montgomery pass to Brian Garrett resulted in a 28 yard touchdown run to finish the first half, 35 to 3, Blue Ridge over Pickens.
Pickens first touchdown came late in the third quarter when Mason Covey intercepted a Tigers’ pass and set up a 35 yard touchdown on a pass from quarterback, Elijah Turner, and cut the Tigers’ lead to 35 - 10. Blue Ridge once again struck on a Montgomery pass to Tay Jenkins to take the end zone and put the score to 42 - 10. Pickens came back on the next drive and scored on a Turner pass to Mason Covey, for their last score on the night.
The Tigers extended their lead by another 7 points late in the game, but held Pickens to 18 points on the night and take the victory for a final score of 49 - 18, Blue Ridge. The Tigers’ quarterback, Ty Montgomery, completed 20 of 27 passes for 255 yards and 5 scores on the night. Blue Ridge ends the night (7-2) in regular season and (5-1) in conference play. Pickens fell to (5-4), (3-3).
The Blue Flame of Pickens will face the Southside Tigers on Friday night, November 1, at Southside in Greenville.
