PICKENS — The Greer High Yellow Jackets came to Pickens prepared to make a statement, and succeeded in doing so. The Yellow Jackets dominated the Blue Flame of Pickens for the biggest part of the game. Pickens took the lead early on with a 35-yard touchdown pass by Elijah Turner to Mason Covey with point after added by Matt Gravely to give Pickens a 7-0 lead, just 3 minutes into the game.
Greer responded with a rushing touchdown by Quez Nesbitt, his first of four on the night, with point-after completion by Nick Roberson to tie the score 7-all at seven minutes left in the first quarter. Pickens answered with a Turner pass to Mason Covey for a 32 yard touchdown and point after completion to once again take the lead, 14-7.
Early in the second quarter, Greer would strike with a 30-yard touchdown by Quez Nesbitt and point after completion to tie the game. Nesbitt would score again in the second quarter on a 28-yard rushing touchdown with Roberson’s point after good to take the lead 21-14. Greer would be held to a 3-point Roberson conversion with one minute left in the first half to extend their lead to 24-14 over the Blue Flame.
The start of the third quarter would see Pickens with first possession but unable to convert and Greer once again took over on offense and were held on the next two possessions to field goal attempts by Nick Roberson, who completes both for a 30-14 lead over Pickens. The Blue Flame on its next possession narrowed Greer’s lead to 10 points on an Austin Clark one-yard touchdown run. The Flame failed to convert on a two point after attempt.
Greer’s Emmanuel Kelly scored on a 99-yard kickoff return with point after to extend their lead to 37-20 over Pickens. The Yellow Jackets would dominate the rest of the night with a 76-yard touchdown run by Nesbitt who rushed for a career high of 344 yards for the Yellow Jackets. Adrian McGee would provide Greer’s final touchdown on the night, a 2-yard touchdown run with Roberson’s point after complete to end the night for Greer with a final score of Greer- 51 to Pickens - 20. Greer finished the night 7-1 (5-0) while Pickens falls to 5-3 (3-2). Pickens faces Blue Ridge next Friday night at Pickens.
