U.S. Army


Army 1st Lt. Deshawn L. Smith recently arrived for duty as a U.S. Army Recruiting Operations Officer with Milwaukee Army Recruiting Battalion, Wis. Smith is the son of Rosalind Smith and grandson of Lillie Mae Smith, both of Adams Run.


He is a 2005 graduate of Garrett Academy of Technology, North Charleston. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from Clemson University.


U.S. Navy


Navy Seaman Alex R. Cowan recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.


During the eight-week program, Cowan completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.


Cowan, a 2013 graduate of Wren High School in Piedmont, is the son of David W. Cowan of Townville and Shawna L. Young of Piedmont. He is also brother of Taylor F. Cowan of Pickens.


U.S. Air Force


Air Force Airman 1st Class Mathew J. Lewallen graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.


Lewallen completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.


Lewallen is the son of Shannon B. Cook of Easley and Mark A. Lewallen of Pendleton, and grandson of Jackie J. and Linda B. Lewallen of Anderson. He is a 2013 graduate of Pendleton High School.

Mefleh is the son of Jeanne A. and Nedal Y. Mefleh of Westminster, grandson of James A. Spearman of Westminster, and nephew of Robert H. Spearman of Townville, Abed Yaseen of Walhalla, and Yousef Mefleh of Westminster.


He is a 2009 graduate of West-Oak High School in Westminster. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2013 from Clemson University.
