PICKENS COUNTY – Between his upcoming marriage and budding career, staying busy is not a problem for deputy sheriff Jonathan Byers of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.

“I just recently graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, and I’ve only been on the road for seven months, so I’ve been busy learning my new job” Byers said. “I am also getting married next year and I am in the middle of scheduling events, trying on tuxedoes, food tasting, and being dragged all over by my fiancée. Luckily, my family has been involved in law enforcement for many years so I have a basic understanding of the job, but I haven’t had a lot free time lately.”

Byers is a lifelong resident of Pickens County and is happy to be following in the footsteps of the man who inspired to him pursue a career in law enforcement.

“My uncle has been a part of the sheriff’s office for 30 years,” Byers said. “He was my inspiration and he is why I am here. He took me out on patrol when I was younger, and I knew then that being a sheriff’s deputy was what I wanted to do.”

Byers said his goal is to become an aviator for the Pickens County Sheriff’s office.

After school, I attended Greenville Technical College for a short time and studied Aviation Maintenance,” he said. “My plan is to go back and complete my degree so I can apply my education to my career here at the sheriff’s office.”

According to Byers, aviation can serve a variety of services for the sheriff’s office.

“Aviation is very valuable to the sheriff’s office,” Byers said. “It can provide air support for deputies in times of need, it can be used for transport, and it can be used for search and rescue operations.”

Byers said he could not pursue his career without the support of his family.

My fiancée has been there for me since day one and none of this would be possible without her,” he said. “Of course, my uncle has provided a great example of what it means to be a deputy sheriff in Pickens County. I am truly lucky.”
