PICKENS COUNTY — United Way of Pickens County kicked off its2013-2014 campaign kickoff last week, announcing $122,400 in early giving through Pacesetter teams.

The announcement came last Thursday along with awards for last year’s fund raising for the local organization, which helps provide funding to approximately 20 local aid agencies. The festivities drew approximately 200 local business leaders and fund raising team members to banquet facilities at Southern Wesleyan University.

“United Way Pacesetter Companies “set the pace” for the United Way campaign,” said United Way Executive Director Julie Capaldi. They are the ones that kicked off the $122,400 in giving for the coming campaign.

“They run their campaigns before the kickoff and help us gauge how successful our annual campaign will be. Pacesetter companies are community leaders and strong supporters of United Way,” she said. “They are chosen to be Pacesetter because they are willing to assume a leadership role within the United Way campaign and because they show an amazing commitment to helping those in need in our community.”

Activity and creativity have already shown up in the early campaign, Capaldi said.

“Pacesetters run model campaign; they go above and beyond conducting traditional workplace giving programs, and involve their employees in positive, meaningful ways during the campaign,” she said.

Pacesetters include Blue Ridge Electric, Cornell Dubilier, SCBT, Shaw Industries and Belk.

SCBT won the Pacesetter award, Capaldi said. “The criteria to win this award is a tally that includes: increases in employee giving, increases in corporate giving, employee participation, conducting special events, conducting United Way presentations, and participating in employee events such as agency tours.”
