NORRIS — To a crowd full of anxious prospective shoppers, the town of Norris opened the doors on a new Dollar General March 15, the first new business constructed in the town since the 1980s.

“As far as grand openings go, this is one of, if not the, biggest I remember ever having been to,” Dollar General District Manager Claude Henry said. “There was huge crowd and everyone seemed excited and happy to have us here. We’re looking forward to being part of Norris.”

Not only does the new store represent eight to 10 new jobs, Mayor Odell Williams said, it means more convenience for the town’s residents.

“I know my wife stops at the dollar store just about everyday, and now she can stop here in Norris,” Williams said. “I’m a firm believer in spending money locally, and this is going to help keep some money right here in town. Just about everyone who lives here is within walking distance, too.”

The number of residents involved in the ribbon cutting was more than expected.

“When they opened the doors, once the ribbon was cut, we had at least 150 people waiting in line to go in,” Norris Town Clerk Ann Clardy said of the crowd on hand. “They were waiting in the parking lot, around the corner of the building, there were people everywhere. It was exciting for everybody.”

It might not be much for most towns, but for Norris, the addition of the new Dollar General has people smiling.

“I just know everyone’s happy to have them here, and this is a big deal for us,” Williams said. “This may be a new store in Norris, but it’ll benefit the county as well, and help keep some tax dollars close by.”
