PICKENS — The Pickens County Literacy Association board of trustees elected Janie Day, Jimmie Haynes and Vanessa Lee as new board members when they met in February. Board members serve a minimum of two years.
The new board members participate in a variety of community volunteer activities in addition to being PCLA volunteers.
Day works part-time at Pickens Savings and Loan, where she has worked for 30 years. Haynes retired from Pickens Savings and Loan after 45 years. Lee is a former employee of the Pickens County School District and works with her husband, the pastor at The Carpenter’s House in Powdersville.
The board discussed the upcoming spring used book sale scheduled for April 4 and April 5 at the Pickens Presbyterian Church. The PCLA’s semi-annual book sales continue to be a popular event in the community as well as a major fund raiser for the organization.
Members received copies of the current by-laws to review and also selected a nominating committee for their upcoming officer elections. They discussed ways of reaching out to more students. They encourage and welcome ideas, suggestions and recommendations from the public.
The PCLA’s mission is to help increase literacy through use of trained volunteer tutors to assist non-readers and low-level readers in improving their reading and writing skills in a one-on-one setting.
