PICKENS — Talent shows are all the rage in reality television these days and it will be a talent show that will help raise money and awareness to prevent child abuse.
“Show Us Your Talent” is a fundraiser being held Jan. 25 by The Parenting Place in conjunction with the Child Abuse Prevention Center. The money raised will be used for education and awareness to prevent the abuse of children.
Theresa Woods is helping organize the event, not her first experience with this type of venture having worked with the Miss South Carolina pageant for fifteen years, but heading up a charity event is new.
“I had always tried to point people in the right direction over the years,” Woods explained. “We’ve helped raise money for Children’s Miracle Network and I’ve participated locally on some things, but when they asked me to help with ‘Show Us Your Talent,’ something in my heart said this is what I should be doing.”
The contest will be much like the popular reality show “The Voice” with contestants auditioning and performing in multiple rounds with a call back of sorts following each round. Woods is already excited about the contestants entered to date and knows there is more talent in Pickens County that should be competing as well.
“We’re off to a good start and we’ve got some really talented people entered already,” she said. “We have room for plenty more and there are some names missing. There’s $1,000 in prizes and cash being given away and there are some great singers here.”
The opening round of competition will be held Jan. 25 and the finals are scheduled for Feb. 15. This is the first year the “Show Us Your Talent” fundraiser will be held, but Woods is hopeful the show will provide enough entertainment it will become an annual occurrence.
“South Carolina is number one in America in Domestic Violence and that spills over in the household,” Woods stressed. “Something has to be done to protect these sweet kids. No child should have to deal with that and I hope we can make a difference.”
