PICKENS COUNTY — If Lois Porter had a passion for helping victims of cancer before, she really has one since the diagnosis of her sister with the same type of the disease she has fought off twice.

That makes at least four of her family members who have had some form of cancer, ranging from lung cancer to colon cancer to breast cancer.

What follows from Porter is a diligence in recruiting people for the fund raising efforts and support system of the American Cancer Society.

One of her favorite events in the Pickens County Relay for Life. She starts early promoting it, inviting anyone she sees to organizational meetings like the Jan. 13 Kickoff event.

Porter is on the Relay’s organizational committee, which is holding monthly meetings in anticipation of the Relay itself to be held the first week of May.

Porter will revive her “Lucky Lois” Relay team for the May event and fund raising events leading up to that.

The coordinating committee itself has discussed a pancake breakfast to raise money to fight the disease and assist with support efforts. The committee is looking to surpass the 32 teams that were the core of last year’s Relay for Life.

Five groups are currently signed up, but Porter will push for more, saying they need to plan to be at the Jan. 13 event at Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library.

So far in addition to the Lucky Lois team, Sam’s Club, Rally for Allie (Tammy Wilson), Camp Rock (Andrea Bradley), Cornerstone Bank and woodmen of the World have announced teams.

Porter’s tears flow when the discussion turns to her sister who will be battling the disease between now and the kickoff.

She also appreciates the support structure of AMC, which provided someone to talk to through her illnesses.

Jackie Day recently passed away after fighting cancer for decades, Porter said. Day helped her through many difficult times by offering a concerned ear and advice.

“I could call her at 3 in the morning if I needed to.” Porter said. “You need people like that.”
