PICKENS COUNTY – A 16-year-old Daniel High student is facing charges after school officials allegedly heard her discussing a plan to attack the school.

Pickens County Sheriff’s Office officials say the student, who is a juvenile and cannot be named, made the alleged statements to other classmates in the presence of a school faculty member on Oct. 18.

Authorities say the student was charged with disturbing schools and breach of peace.

John Eby, a public information specialist with the School District of Pickens County, said the student was held under supervision after the comments were made.

“The staff at Daniel High overheard a student describing what sounded like a plan to attack the school,” Eby said. “The school resource officer was notified and the student was put under supervision.”

The student has not been permitted on school property since the incident, district officials say.

The district confirmed the student has been referred for expulsion.

Sheriff’s office officials say investigators responded to the classroom at the request of a teacher.

Officials say the student was subsequently suspended pending an expulsion hearing which was held on Thursday, Oct. 24 by the Pickens County School District.

Sheriff’s Office officials say an ensuing investigation led to the charges. Police say several students along with the faculty member were interviewed as a part of the investigation.

Investigators said, “The charges stem from statements being made about the potential use of hazardous devices and firearms.”

Authorities say no specific student was identified or targeted as a potential victim.

“We will not tolerate any words or actions that compromise the security of our students,” Eby said. “We are grateful for the sheriff’s office and its cooperation.”
