EASLEY – An Easley resident could face up to 10 years imprisonment after being indicted on one count in connection to theft of government funds last week.

Easley resident Anthony Lee Holcomb, 60, was charged in a one-count indictment, according to United States Attorney Bill Nettles

A Federal Grand Jury in Greenville returned the indictment on Thursday.

Holcomb was charged with theft of government funds, a violation of 18 U. S. C. § 641, according to Nettles.

“The indictment alleges that he was receiving VA (Veterans Affairs) benefits based on an inability to work and income status,” Assistant United States Attorney Bill Watkins, who was assigned the case, said. “The indictment further charges that he was actually and running a construction business and did not notify the VA that he was indeed able to work and therefore was not entitled to the benefits he was claiming.”

The indictment claims the benefits totaled more than $1,000, according to Wilkins.

Along with a 10 year prison sentence, the maximum penalty Holcomb could receive a fine of $250,000.

According to Nettles, the case was investigated by agents of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Office of Inspector General.
