WALHALLA — The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested two Fair Play men June 19 on charges related to theft of materials from the construction site of the new Walhalla High School.

Brandon Scott Wheeler, 32, of 1251 S.C. 59, and Keith Alan Schlachter, 43, of 124 Ruby Road, were each charged with grand larceny.

According to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to S.C. 11 around 6:45 p.m. June 18 to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

The deputy found a trailer on the side of the road with a blown tire. The trailer was loaded with rebar and other building materials.

A packing slip on the materials had the name of the construction company building the new Walhalla High School plus had the address of the new school.

The suspects’ vehicle was found at the Ingles in West Union. According to the incident report, Wheeler and Schlachter said they had permission to take the materials but construction company officials stated that no one gave them permission.

The vehicle was towed. The value of the items taken, according to warrants, was around $3,000.
