EASLEY — A 22-year-old woman died last week after being shot with a handgun a toddler found on the floorboard of the vehicle she was in.

Alexandra Anita Santos, of 400 S. D St. in Easley, was pronounced dead at Baptist Easley Hospital from a single gunshot to the chest, Pickens County Coroner Kandy C. Kelley said.

According to the Easley Police Department, the vehicle in which the shooting occurred April 17 was on Hastings Circle when the toddler, a 6-year-old, picked up a handgun from the rear floorboard. The child pulled the trigger, sending one bullet through the rear of the front passenger seat and striking Santos.

The shooting occurred at approximately 12:52 p.m. The investigation is continuing and details are limited.

A statement by Easley police said the investigation “in relation to the firearm and how it ended up on the floorboard of the vehicle” will continue.

At this point no charges have been filed. Major Tim Tollison of the Easley Police Department said it could take up to two weeks to get information about the firearm registration.
