Saitta seeking reelection

PICKENS COUNTY — Alex Saitta, member of the School District of Pickens County, has stated he will be filing for reelection following a loss in the primaries for a seat on Pickens County Council.

“I made it clear when I filed for the county council election I would still run for reelection of my school board seat if I came up short,” Saitta said.

With his years as a member of SDPC’s board, Saitta was prepared for the issues he feels will be facing the district and also be issues during his reelection bid which will be decided during the November general election.

“Clearly the school board has struggled because of the school closings issue and the elimination of classroom teaching positions as well,” Saitta said. “I want to continue to stand up for the public, be their eyes and ears on the board which is needed now more than ever. I have the time, resources, skills, and courage to speak up for them as I have for the last 12 years.”

But Saitta was quick to point out that no matter the differences which might exist in the board’s makeup, the precedent is there for what may be accomplished with proper planning and working in unity.

“Five or six years ago there were some changes put into place which are now beginning to come to fruition. We set our graduation rate goal at 80 percent in 2011,” Saitta said. “We added teachers, more reading interventionists, and even some night classes and have seen that rate go from 71 percent to 82 percent.”

The major concern for many are finances and that is where Saitta has the most to offer.

“I have 17 years experience in the financial industry and 12 years on the school board and my goal is to see more money making it to the classrooms,” he said. “I want to continue to be the financial conscience of the school board, asking questions, and pushing money to our classes. Anyone other than me won’t have the courage to speak up and that’s very much needed right now.”
