LIBERTY — With a new school year closing in, Liberty High School has announced its new athletic director for the 2016-2017 year and the new hire has ties to Pickens County.
Bret Turner, former Seneca High School head football coach and native of Pickens County, has been tapped to take the reins of the Red Devils’ athletic department. Before joining the Bobcats in Seneca, Turner also served as assistant athletic director and head football coach at Pickens High School.
Liberty principal Josh Oxendine, who made the announcement, said he is excited at the prospect of Turner at the helm of Red Devil athletics.
“Coach Turner brings a wealth of experience to Liberty High School,” Oxendine said. “We are excited to have someone leading our athletic program with the knowledge of high school athletics that he has as well as his passion for developing young people.”
While at the head of Seneca’s football program, Turner ended a 19-year drought with a region title in football last season. While leading the Blue Flame in football, he compiled a 29-26 record and led Pickens to four playoff appearances.
Oxendine was also excited about the mindset and ethics Turner will bring to Liberty High School.
“This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes and our community,” Oxendine said. “Having someone with great character and integrity in charge of our Athletic Department will continue to build a strong culture at Liberty High School.”
