EASLEY — As a continuation of its B-Side productions, Easley’s Foothills Playhouse will present the comedic play “Spirit!” for one weekend only beginning June 24.

The Happy Hollow Rest Home, the location where all the action in “Spirit!” plays out, brings together a variety of delightful characters, all of whom want more from life than their restricted existence allows.

When 83-year-old Clara begins taking hula lessons, holding seances and sending out for pepperoni pizza, the other residents are overjoyed but the manager is dismayed. Simply set in Clara’s room, the play adroitly combines with wisdom as a young aide, a lawyer and a policeman join forces to ensure that Happy Hollow’s group spirit is allowed to grow.

First-time director Carl Gingola is pleased to be a part of the production.

“Spirit! is an endearing dramatic comedy that deals with the variety of individuals you might meet at an assisted living facility. As director, I have been a volunteer at Happy Hollow working with an amazing group of actors and the Playhouse staff to bring “Spirit!” to life,” Gingola said. “Having recently been exposed to the administrators, staff and residents of several assisted living facilities and then helping to transition someone dear to me into a New Jersey facility, I jumped at the opportunity to work on this play.”

For the local theatre-goer looking for something a little different, “Spirit!” might be a production they would enjoy with its strong mix of the comedic and dramatic.

“The Happy Hollow Assisted Living facility brings together a variety of delightful characters, all of which want more from life than their restricted existence allows,” Gingola explained. “When 83-year-old Clara begins to test the boundaries of her existence at Happy Hollow, the other residents are overjoyed, but the manager is not at all happy with this. The result is an evening of drama and comedy.”

B-Side productions at Foothills Playhouse are selected because they bring something a little different to local theatre while still allowing the traditional offerings patrons have become used to.

“Spirit!” will run June 24 and June 25 at 8 p.m. and at 3 p.m. June 26. Tickets are available through the playhouse box office at www.fhplayhouse.com/wordpress/ or by phone at 864-855-1817. Seats for all three presentations are $5.
