PICKENS — Calling all book worms! The Pickens County Literacy Association is holding a book sale in All Saints Hall at Pickens Presbyterian Church this Friday and Saturday.
“We used to hold these sales annually, but the demand was so great that we upped it to twice a year,” said Everette Curl, director of the Pickens County Literacy Association (PCLA). “But these sales are our sole way of making funds. Well, our only way other than donations.”
PCLA has been holding book sales for the past eight or so years.
“I can’t remember exactly how many years, but they’ve just grown every year,” said Curl. “This sale this weekend though is the biggest selection we’ve ever had. If you’re still looking for a Mother’s Day present, this is the place to come.”
The sale offers hardbacks, paperbacks, cookbooks, children’s books and books covering just about any other topic one can think of, from do-it-yourself to health and fitness.
Cassettes, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes will also be available.
“The prices are very reasonable,” said Curl. “And all the proceeds go to fund the Literacy Association. We’re all volunteer and every class is free. The dedication of the tutors and the relationships that grow is truly something. We never turn someone away.”
The book sales for PCLA are entirely donation driven, with drop-off locations available throughout the county.
“We’re always accepting donations, and if it’s a sizable load, we’ll come pick them up,” she said.
Drop-off locations include Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative office, Grace United Methodist Church, Pickens First Baptist Church, Pickens Savings and Loan and Pickens Federal Credit Union in Pickens and Custom Cleaners, Kelly’s Pharmacy and Robin’s Laundromat in Easley.
Other spots include the Central Recreation Center and Family Medicine Associates in Clemson.
The PCLA’s book sale will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 6 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 at the church, located at 311 W. Main St. in Pickens.
