LIBERTY — In a continuing effort to promote Southern Gospel music, the local group Abishai will be the host group for a gospel concert scheduled for March 19 in Liberty.
Formerly known as Family Harmony, Abishai is made up of siblings Rebecca Roper, Mark Dibler and Deborah Dibler and the group wishes to continue sharing with and inspiring audiences with their music.
Along the way, they are hoping to encourage others to come out and enjoy the harmonies of Southern Gospel in Pickens County.
“I grew up on Southern Gospel music. I can remember spending many afternoons locked away in my room listening to gospel music on the radio, and I fondly recall attending several concerts of my favorite groups during any given year,” said Dana Rongione, a local fan. “Now days though, it seems like most of that good music has moved on to other parts of the country, and that’s a shame. While I have nothing against contemporary tunes — which are increasingly popular in the Upstate — it would be nice to see a resurgence of good old gospel music in the area.”
As part of the group’s efforts to re-energize the love of Southern Gospel, Mark Bishop and The Hills will join Abishai for the concert. Bishop, renowned for his lyrics, has penned songs for many popular groups and has a unique style of his own. He will be the featured performer with The Hills opening the show.
“Lord willing, this concert will be the first of many more to come,” said Rebecca Roper of Abishai. “We are aiming to have at least three concerts a year, but hopefully more.”
