CENTRAL — This past summer, Connie Leverett, science teacher at Daniel High School, attended the ASM Materials Science Teachers Camp at the University of South Carolina.

ASM Materials Camps are part of ASM International, a society dedicated to serving the materials science and engineering profession. Teachers Camp is a recognized program that strengthens the curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The week-long camp offered practical lab experiences that demonstrated to educators how to use applied engineering techniques in the classroom. Teachers were introduced to methods that make math and core science principles more appealing and relevant to middle and high school students.

Materials topics are great motivators in any engineering, technology or science course as students complete projects that are meaningful to them. Teachers worked hands-on with metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites, and developed a greater appreciation for the importance of these materials in the world today.

Leverett will incorporate the labs and information from the ASM Teachers Camp into her Physical Science and Environmental Science classes at Daniel High School.
