PIEDMONT — Pickens High School lost to the Wren Hurricanes on the road Friday in the first conference match up for both teams this season. The final score was 42-12.

Prior to kickoff, both teams lined up along the end zones as a moment of silence for legendary Blue Flame Coach Bill Isaacs was observed.

Pickens (1-3, 0-1) came into the game with high hopes after last week’s 30-0 shut out of the Liberty Red Devils but Wren’s high-powered, fast offense proved too much. Two quick scores had the Hurricanes on top by early in the first quarter with the Blue Flame managing a safety off a botched Wren punt. The quarter ended 14-2.

Wren (2-2, 1-0) put up another 13 points in the second quarter and fended off an attempted rally as Pickens scored 10. Unfortunately for the Blue Flame, that 10 points would be the last they scored all night. Both teams headed to the locker rooms with the score 27-12 at the half.

The third and fourth quarters were more defensive than the first half. Wren scored 12 in the third and snagged a field goal in the fourth while holding Pickens at bay.

Wren quarter back Jay Ulrich had a stellar night Friday with the junior throwing for 232 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to his pass yards, Ulrich rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back Nathaniel Ekwere was averaging 10.5 yards a carry on Friday and rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns.

In all, Wren put up 535 yards of offense to Pickens’ 249.

This Friday the Blue Flame return home to host West-Oak (0-4). Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
